RC Electronics FAQs

Q: What do 2S, 3S and 4S mean on a LiPo battery?

A: The "S" is the number of cells in the pack, and each cell adds 3.7V. So 2S is 7.4V, 3S is 11.1V and 4S is 14.8V. Check your ESC or vehicle manual for the highest cell count it supports before you buy, because running more voltage than the ESC is rated for can damage it. Shop by cell count in our 2S LiPo, 3S LiPo and 4S and above ranges.

Q: Does the battery plug need to match my ESC?

A: Yes. The battery plug and the ESC plug must be the same type, such as Deans or XT60, or they won't connect. You can choose a pack with the right plug already fitted, like the NXE 7.4V 2200mAh with Deans, or change the plug on your ESC using parts from our Connectors range.

Q: Can I put a brushless motor in a car with a brushed ESC?

A: No. A brushless motor needs a brushless ESC to run, so upgrading means replacing both. The simplest way is a matched motor and ESC set from our Car Brushless Combo range, which takes the guesswork out of compatibility.

Q: What does kV mean on a brushless motor?

A: kV is how many RPM the motor turns per volt. A higher kV motor spins faster, while a lower kV motor gives more torque and runs cooler on higher voltages or in heavier vehicles. For example, the Maverick 2845 4700kV suits lighter, faster setups, and the Maverick 2845 3800kV trades top speed for extra pull.

Q: Do I need a special charger for LiPo batteries?

A: Yes. LiPo packs need a LiPo-compatible balance charger that keeps every cell at the same voltage. Charge them in a fire-resistant bag and never leave them charging unattended. You'll find chargers in our LiPo Chargers range and protection in our Safe Bags range.

Q: Will any receiver work with my transmitter?

A: No. A receiver has to use the same brand and radio protocol as your transmitter to bind to it. Surface receivers are made for cars, trucks and boats, while air receivers are made for planes and helicopters. Browse our Surface Receivers and Air Receivers ranges, and check the product page for which transmitters each one supports.
