RC Boat FAQs

Q: What's the difference between an RTR and an ARTR RC boat?

A: An RTR (Ready to Run) boat usually comes with everything you need to get on the water, including the transmitter. An ARTR (Almost Ready to Run) version is the same boat without some electronics, usually the radio and battery, so it suits hobbyists who already own gear they want to reuse. You can compare the Joysway Mad Shark V2 RTR with the Mad Shark V2 ARTR, and check each product page for exactly what's included.

Q: Which hull type should I choose: deep vee, catamaran or hydrofoil?

A: A deep vee hull cuts through chop and wind waves, so it suits open lakes. A catamaran rides on two hulls and grips through turns on flatter water. A hydrofoil lifts the hull out of the water for a smooth, distinctive ride. To compare, see the Joysway Bullet V4 Deep Vee, Joysway Big Storm Catamaran and Joysway E1 RaceBird Hydrofoil.

Q: How fast should my first RC boat be?

A: Start with a brushed boat in the 20 to 25 km/h range. Learning to steer and judge distance on water takes practice, and a slower boat is easier to bring back after a mistake. The Joysway Magic Vee V6 and Joysway Warrior V4 are good starting points before you move up to 55 to 60 km/h brushless boats.

Q: What does PNP mean on a racing sailboat?

A: PNP (Plug and Play) means the boat comes without a radio system, so you'll need your own transmitter and receiver. The RTR versions of the Dragon Flite 95 (DF95) and Dragon Force 65 (DF65) include a Flysky i6 radio. Both are popular one-design classes raced at model yacht clubs, so check which version your local club sails.

Q: Is there an easy sailboat for beginners or kids?

A: A small RTR yacht is the easiest way to learn wind direction and sail trim without a big investment in setup. The Joysway Caribbean V3 Yacht is compact enough for ponds and comes ready to sail.

Q: Can an RC boat be used for fishing?

A: Yes. Bait boats carry and drop your line further out than you can cast. The Joysway Fishing Surfer V2 includes GPS and a fish finder. Rules on bait boats vary between states and waterways, so check local fishing regulations before you use one.
