Corgi Aviation Archive 1/72 North American F-86E Sabre ‘Eleanor E / CHRISTINE’ – William T. ‘Bill’ Whisner Jr, Korea 1952

The Corgi Aviation Archive AA35817 is a highly detailed 1/72 scale diecast model of North American F-86E-10-NA Sabre 51-2735 / FU-735, depicting ‘Eleanor E / CHRISTINE’, flown by celebrated USAF fighter ace William T. ‘Bill’ Whisner Jr during the Korean War in 1952.

The North American F-86 Sabre became one of the defining fighter aircraft of the early jet age. Developed in the years immediately following the Second World War, its swept-wing configuration, excellent handling and high-speed performance made it one of the most capable Western fighters of its generation.

The Sabre achieved legendary status during the Korean War, where it regularly encountered the Soviet-designed MiG-15. These engagements represented some of the first large-scale jet-versus-jet aerial combat in history and ushered in a completely new era of fighter warfare.

The F-86E represented an important development of the Sabre design. One of its major improvements was an all-moving horizontal tail, which improved control and manoeuvrability at the high speeds encountered during combat.

Armed with six .50 calibre machine guns, the Sabre remained a true gunfighter. Pilots needed to manoeuvre into visual range of their opponent and position the aircraft accurately before opening fire, resulting in some of the most intense aerial engagements of the Korean War.

AA35817 depicts the distinctive Sabre associated with William T. ‘Bill’ Whisner Jr, an already highly decorated fighter pilot before arriving in Korea.

Whisner had achieved 15.5 aerial victories during the Second World War, flying P-51 Mustangs with the 352nd Fighter Group. His wartime aircraft included the famous ‘Moonbeam McSWINE’, which Corgi has also reproduced as AA27709.

During the Korean War, Whisner once again demonstrated his exceptional ability as a fighter pilot. Flying the F-86, he was credited with two enemy aircraft destroyed in the F-86A and another three in the F-86E, along with additional shared and damaged aircraft.

These victories gave Whisner the rare distinction of achieving ace status in two separate wars, making him one of only seven American airmen to accomplish the feat. Corgi also notes that Whisner uniquely received three Distinguished Flying Crosses.

Corgi has recreated Whisner's F-86E-10-NA, serial 51-2735 / FU-735 in its premium Aviation Archive series, with the distinctive ‘Eleanor E / CHRISTINE’ markings accurately reproduced. The Australian distributor confirms the aircraft serial and FU-735 identification for AA35817.

The model combines diecast metal construction with additional detailed components, providing the substantial feel and high level of finish expected from the Aviation Archive range.

Detailed panel lines, control surfaces, cockpit features and landing gear reproduce the sleek appearance of North American's famous swept-wing fighter.

The model arrives fully assembled and professionally painted, so there is no construction or painting required. It can be displayed straight from the box.

A dedicated display cradle and base are included, allowing the Sabre to be presented in an attractive in-flight configuration. Corgi also supplies a Limited Edition Certificate with the model.

At 1/72 scale, AA35817 measures approximately 160mm long, 160mm wide and 54mm high, making it an excellent companion to other Korean War and early Cold War aircraft in the Corgi Aviation Archive collection.

With its association with one of America's most accomplished fighter pilots and one of the most famous jet fighters ever produced, AA35817 is an excellent addition to any collection of USAF, Korean War or Cold War aviation.
