Corgi Aviation Archive 1/48 Fokker E.III Eindecker E339/16 – Lt. Josef Jacobs, Fokkerstaffel West, 1916
The Corgi Aviation Archive AA28704 is a highly detailed 1/48 scale diecast model of Fokker E.III Eindecker E339/16, flown by legendary German fighter ace Leutnant Josef Jacobs while serving with Fokkerstaffel West from Le Faux Ferme Aerodrome, west of Chambry, France, in June 1916.
The Fokker E.III Eindecker was one of the most historically significant fighter aircraft of the First World War. Appearing during the formative years of aerial combat, the Eindecker helped establish the concept of the dedicated single-seat fighter and gave German pilots a significant advantage over their opponents during 1915 and early 1916.
One of the Eindecker's most important innovations was its synchronised forward-firing machine gun. The system allowed the pilot to fire through the arc of the propeller without damaging the blades, enabling the aircraft itself to be aimed directly at an opponent.
This seemingly simple development transformed aerial combat. Instead of attempting to operate a separately mounted weapon while simultaneously flying the aircraft, an Eindecker pilot could manoeuvre into position, point the entire aircraft at his target and fire directly ahead.
The effectiveness of the Fokker fighters contributed to the period of German aerial superiority that Allied airmen famously referred to as the "Fokker Scourge."
AA28704 represents Fokker E.III E339/16, an aircraft associated with Josef Jacobs during the early stages of what would become an extraordinary combat career.
Jacobs had developed an interest in aviation before the outbreak of the First World War and learned to fly in 1912 at just 18 years of age. When war began, he initially served as a motorcycle dispatch rider before moving into aviation as an observer and artillery spotter.
His flying ability eventually saw him invited to join the newly established Fokkerstaffel West, where he became one of the earliest dedicated fighter pilots in military aviation.
Jacobs would remain involved in operational flying over the Western Front for much of the war and eventually became commander of Jagdstaffel 22.
He later became particularly famous for flying the Fokker Dr.I Triplane, claiming 30 victories while flying the type – more than any other pilot achieved in the famous Dr.I.
By the end of the First World War, Josef Jacobs had been credited with 48 aerial victories and awarded the prestigious Pour le Mérite, better known as the "Blue Max". He became one of Germany's highest-scoring fighter aces and ultimately the last surviving recipient of the Pour le Mérite from the German Imperial Air Service.
Corgi has recreated Jacobs' E339/16 as part of its premium Aviation Archive collection. The larger 1/48 scale is particularly well suited to the Eindecker, allowing the unusual structure and character of this pioneering fighter aircraft to be clearly appreciated.
The model features an authentic tan finish with historically accurate markings, capturing the appearance of Jacobs' aircraft during its 1916 service.
Fine detailing throughout recreates the Eindecker's distinctive monoplane configuration, open cockpit, fixed landing gear and early fighter construction.
A rotatable propeller provides an additional display feature, while the model's diecast construction gives it the substantial feel associated with Corgi's Aviation Archive range.
The aircraft arrives fully assembled and professionally painted, requiring no construction or finishing before display.
A dedicated display cradle and base are included, allowing the Eindecker to be presented in an attractive in-flight configuration. Corgi also includes a Limited Edition Certificate with the model.
At 1/48 scale, AA28704 measures approximately 150mm long, 205mm wide and 50mm high, giving the aircraft plenty of presence without requiring excessive display space.
With its association with one of Germany's most accomplished fighter aces and its representation of one of the most important aircraft in the development of aerial warfare, the Corgi AA28704 Fokker E.III Eindecker is an excellent addition to any First World War aviation collection.
