The Tamiya Volkswagen Golf II GTI 16V recreates one of the most iconic hot hatchbacks of the 1980s as a 1/10 scale RC assembly kit.

Tamiya 58748 combines a detailed polycarbonate Mk2 Golf GTI body with the versatile MB-01 chassis, configured in front-motor, front-wheel-drive (FF) form to closely replicate the drivetrain layout of the full-size Volkswagen.

Iconic Volkswagen Golf II GTI 16V

Volkswagen introduced the second-generation Golf in 1983, with the high-performance Golf II GTI 16V joining the range in 1986.

Powered by a 1,781cc inline-four DOHC 16-valve engine, the GTI 16V became one of the defining European performance hatchbacks of its era. Competition-prepared versions also enjoyed success in international rally competition.

Tamiya captures the distinctive square-edged Mk2 Golf shape with a detailed lightweight polycarbonate body.

Detailed Polycarbonate Body

The Golf's classic shape is reproduced in polycarbonate, with separate moulded components adding extra scale realism.

Unlike the special 47516 pre-painted version, 58748 is the standard kit version, allowing the builder to paint and finish the body themselves.

The MB-01 is one of Tamiya's most versatile compact 2WD platforms.

For the Golf II GTI, it's assembled in a front-motor, front-wheel-drive configuration, appropriately matching the layout of the real Golf.

This gives the car a driving character quite different from a conventional rear-wheel-drive M-chassis or 4WD touring car.

4-Bevel Gear Differential

A 4-bevel gear differential provides smooth power delivery to the driven front wheels, allowing the inside and outside wheels to rotate at different speeds while cornering.

The kit's 29-tooth pinion provides an overall 5.83:1 gear ratio.

Radial Tyres & Dish Wheels

Period-style dish wheels are paired with 60D radial tyres, giving the Golf an understated appearance that suits the classic Mk2 body.

The tyres measure approximately 25mm wide and 59mm in diameter front and rear.

540 Motor & ESC Included

The kit includes a 540-size brushed motor and the Australian/export version is supplied with an Electronic Speed Controller (ESC).

This leaves the radio equipment, steering servo, battery and charger to be selected separately.
