Holden HR: Sleek, Safe, and Stylish

In response to slipping HD sales, Holden launched the HR with a modern, sleeker design featuring reworked rooflines, new grille, and distinctive tower rear lights. Produced until 1968, the HR became one of Holdens best-sellers with 252,352 units, rivaling the popular EH.

Under the hood, the Red engine grew from 179 to 186 cubic inches, boosting performance alongside a wider track and rear windscreen. The Premier model offered luxury touches like woodgrain trim and stainless steel accents, while options included power steering, disc brakes, and limited-slip differentials.

Safety upgradeslike front seat belts, reverse lights, and sun visorswere added just six months after launch, making the HR a pioneer in Australian car safety. Though not a speed demon, the HRs smooth ride, confident handling, and refined comfort secured its place as a beloved classic among Holden enthusiasts today.
