Tamiya 1/14 Grand Hauler Matte Black Edition R/C Tractor Truck Kit

The Tamiya Grand Hauler Matte Black Edition is an impressive 1/14 scale R/C tractor truck assembly kit inspired by the heavily customised big rigs seen on the highways and at truck shows throughout North America. With its stretched chassis, long bonnet, extensive chrome detailing and imposing proportions, the Grand Hauler is one of the most distinctive models in Tamiya's highly regarded 1/14 scale truck range.

This special Matte Black Edition takes the appearance even further, with the main body components factory finished in Metallic Black and treated with a matte urethane top coat. The deep matte finish contrasts beautifully with the extensive metal-plated components used throughout the truck, creating the appearance of a professionally customised full-size show truck straight from the box.

Underneath the detailed body is Tamiya's proven three-axle tractor truck chassis. The ladder frame uses strong aluminium side channels connected by resin cross members, providing a rigid and durable foundation while closely replicating the construction of a full-size truck.

Power comes from an included front-mounted Type 540 brushed motor. Drive is transferred through a realistic 3-speed transmission to both rear axles, providing the Grand Hauler with a functional twin rear-axle drivetrain.

The three-speed gearbox is one of the highlights of Tamiya's tractor truck series. When used with suitable 4-channel radio equipment, gears can be selected remotely from the transmitter, allowing the driver to shift between first, second and third gear while the truck is moving.

Both driven rear axles incorporate three-bevel gear differentials, allowing the inside and outside wheels to rotate at different speeds when cornering for smoother and more realistic handling.

Suspension is equally realistic, with metal leaf springs used at the front and rear. Aluminium friction dampers complement the leaf-spring suspension and help give the truck the characteristic movement and appearance of a full-size heavy vehicle.

The Grand Hauler's stretched custom styling is significantly different from Tamiya's more traditional tractor trucks. The long wheelbase, lowered stance and extended body give it the appearance of a custom American show truck rather than a standard commercial prime mover.

Chrome-style metal-plated components are used extensively throughout the model. These include the large front bumper, radiator grille, roof-mounted horn and light bezels, sun visor, mirrors, air cleaners, muffler covers and numerous other exterior details.

The oversized air cleaners feature photo-etched intake details, while metal exhaust pipes add another layer of realism. Adjustable side and kerb mirrors are mounted on movable metal stays, allowing their position to be set to suit the finished model.

A lowered side step cleverly provides space for installation of an optional Tamiya Multi-Function Control Unit while helping maintain the Grand Hauler's low custom appearance. The fuel tanks are also positioned low beneath the body to complement the truck's distinctive stance.

At the rear, a custom low-mounted bumper provides multiple positions for optional LED lighting. Fender components are also included, completing the highly modified appearance of the rear chassis.

The Grand Hauler includes Tamiya's fifth-wheel coupler system, allowing it to connect to compatible Tamiya 1/14 scale semi-trailers. This allows the truck to be paired with flatbed, container, tanker, reefer and other compatible trailers to create an exceptionally impressive combination.

For an even more realistic driving experience, the Grand Hauler is compatible with the separately available Tamiya Multi-Function Control Unit MFC-01 or MFC-03. These systems can add synchronised lighting, digitally recorded truck sounds and vibration effects.

With an MFC installed, functions such as headlights, brake lights, fog lights, indicators and hazard lights can be operated, while realistic engine starting, idling, acceleration, air horn and gear-change sounds dramatically enhance the experience.

At approximately 692mm long, the Grand Hauler is an imposing model even without a trailer attached. Combined with one of Tamiya's 1/14 scale trailers, the completed combination can extend well beyond one metre in length.
