Description

The Vought V-173 "Flying Pancake" was an American experimental aircraft designed by Cahrles Zimmerman as part of the Vought XF5U program for the US Navy. The V-173, like Zimmerman's other "discoidal" aircraft, featured a flat, round fuselage, an almost complete absence of traditional wings, and power from two piston engines. In the case of the V-173, these were two Continental A-80 engines, each producing 80 hp. This unusual aircraft first flew in 1942 and was placed in reserve in 1947. It is currently part of the Smithsonian Collection and is on display in Maryland. Technical data: length: 4.51m, wingspan (width): 7.1m, height: 4.51m, maximum speed: 222 km/h, climb rate: 3.67 m/s.
