The Vought OS2U Kingfisher (English: Kingfisher) is an American single-engine, all-metal reconnaissance seaplane of World War II construction. The prototype first flew in 1938, and production ran from 1940 to 1945. It was powered by a Pratt-Whitney R-985 engine of various versions, producing 450 hp. The OS2U was primarily a reconnaissance aircraft, based on large US Navy surface vessels, launched by catapult. It was also used for anti-submarine and rescue duties, but with limited success.
