The toldi was a licensed version of sweden's l-60 light tank manufactured in hungary with improvements. Production began in 1938; when the war against the soviet union began, the 20mm gun was not able to compete, and a 40mm gun was installed. The success of the german marder self-propelled artillery gun attracted attention as a possible way to use the toldi, and a self-propelled artillery gun equipped with a german-made pak40 was prototyped in 1944. Although its effectiveness was recognized, the hungarian army did not have enough room to mass-produce it
