The p-51d "mustang" fighter was developed in 1940 at the request of the british royal air force. The aircraft participated in almost all major battles during world war ii, including escorting b-29s that bombed japan in the pacific battlefield. Between 1941 and 1945 , the u. S. Army air force received a total of 14,855 "mustang" series fighters of various types, of which 7,965 p-51ds were equipped with a teardrop cockpit with good visibility and enhanced armament. This type of aircraft was mainly used for interception and battlefield concealment missions. The p-51d aircraft served in the u. S. National guard until 1957
