Dumas Brooklyn Tug 39.5" 1/32 Scale R/C Model Boat Kit – DUMA1238

The Dumas Brooklyn Tug Kit #1238 is an impressive 1/32 scale model of the historic 1910 New York Dock Company steam tug Brooklyn. At 39.5 inches (approximately 1003mm) long, this is a substantial scale model featuring a vacuum-formed hull, traditional die-cut superstructure, laser-cut detailing, numerous cast fittings and brass railings.

Designed for the experienced model boat builder, the Brooklyn can be completed as a highly detailed static display model or equipped for full radio-controlled operation using the optional Dumas running hardware and suitable electronics.

The Historic Brooklyn Railroad Tug

The original Brooklyn was built in 1910 and operated by the New York Dock Company. Steam powered throughout her working life, she served until 1960, when she was eventually sold for scrap.

Brooklyn was one of the distinctive railroad tugs that worked around New York Harbor. These vessels transferred railroad cars across the harbour aboard large barges known as car floats.

Unlike conventional towing tugs, railroad tugs commonly worked with car floats alongside rather than towing them from the stern. This explains several of Brooklyn's distinctive features, including her heavy side guards, single towing posts and unusually long deckhouse.

Large 1/32 Scale Model

At 39.5" / 1003mm long with a 9.5" / approximately 241mm beam, the Brooklyn is one of the larger Dumas tugboat kits.

Its 1/32 scale provides plenty of room for fine detailing while giving the completed model an imposing presence both on display and on the water.

Vacuum-Formed Hull

Rather than requiring the modeller to plank the entire hull from scratch, Dumas supplies the Brooklyn with a vacuum-formed hull.

This provides the basic hull shape while still leaving plenty of traditional model-building work in the deck, superstructure and extensive detailing.

Detailed Die-Cut Superstructure

Above the hull, the Brooklyn features a conventional die-cut superstructure.

The kit also incorporates laser-cut components, numerous cast fittings and brass railings, allowing the builder to recreate the busy appearance and rugged character of an early 20th-century working tug.

The Brooklyn is therefore much more than a simple hull-and-cabin model. There is considerable scope for careful painting, finishing, weathering and additional custom scale detailing.

Designed for R/C Operation

The Brooklyn is designed to accept a single-screw R/C power system.

Dumas specifies its optional #2364 Running Hardware Kit for the model. Importantly, this running hardware is not included with DUMA1238 and must be purchased separately if the boat is being built for powered operation.

The original Dumas recommendation is a #2004 6V electric motor, along with a speed controller, battery, charger and 2-channel radio system.

Modern equivalent electronics may also be selected to suit the model.

Please Note

This is an unassembled scale model boat kit, not a ready-to-run R/C boat. Considerable assembly, fitting, sanding, painting and finishing are required.

The Dumas #2364 Running Hardware Kit is not included with the standard DUMA1238 kit. The motor, ESC, battery, charger and radio-control equipment are also required separately for powered operation.

Some of the running hardware is required relatively early in the model's construction, so builders intending to make the Brooklyn operational should ideally have the required running gear available before progressing too far into the build.
