The Dumas Jolly Jay Kit #1231 is a charming 1/30 scale wooden trawler model kit designed to combine traditional model boat construction with straightforward radio-controlled operation.

At 24 inches (610mm) long, the Jolly Jay is a manageable size for building, transporting and operating. The kit combines die-cut poplar plywood frames, balsa wood hull planking and pre-formed ABS cabin components, and importantly, Dumas supplies the running hardware and electric motor with the kit. It can be completed as either a detailed display model or a fully operational R/C boat.

Classic Working Trawler Design

The Jolly Jay captures the character of a traditional working fishing trawler, with its high bow, enclosed wheelhouse and purposeful displacement-style hull.

Rather than focusing on outright speed, this style of model is ideal for relaxed scale boating. Its traditional workboat appearance also provides plenty of opportunities for the builder to add weathering, deck equipment and other personalised details.

Traditional Plank-on-Frame Hull

DUMA1231 provides a genuine wooden model boat building experience.

The hull is constructed around die-cut poplar plywood frames, which establish the shape and structure of the vessel. Balsa wood planking is then fitted over the frames to form the hull.

This method gives the builder the satisfaction of shaping, sanding and finishing the hull while being more approachable than some of Dumas' larger and more complicated plank-on-frame vessels.

Pre-Formed ABS Cabin Components

To make construction of the upper structure easier, Dumas supplies pre-formed ABS plastic cabin parts.

Combining plastic superstructure components with the traditional wooden hull helps simplify the build while still producing a convincing scale trawler once painted and detailed.

Motor & Running Hardware Included

A particularly useful feature of the Jolly Jay is that the kit includes the complete driveline running hardware and electric motor.

Dumas' documentation specifies a 4.8V electric motor, meaning the builder doesn't need to separately source the basic motor and specialised propeller-shaft hardware before starting the R/C installation.

The electronic speed controller, battery, charger and radio system are still required separately.

Designed for 2-Channel Radio Control

The Jolly Jay can be equipped for straightforward 2-channel radio-controlled operation.

A typical installation provides throttle control through an electronic speed controller and steering through a rudder servo.
