about the sturmtiger
germany's 38cm rw61 auf sturmmo"rser tiger is more commonly known as the sturmtiger. Based on the chassis of the famous tiger i, it was a self-propelled mortar designed by alkett. The first prototype mounting a 38cm mortar was completed by october 20 1943, with 18 such vehicles eventually produced in late 1944. The weapon fired rocket-assisted projectiles out to a maximum range of 4600m, propelled by vents in the gun tube wall that exhausted the propellant gases forward. The sturmtiger was used mostly in defense of the fatherland rather than as an assault mortar as originally intended
