Turbo Trouble: Drama at the 1988 Bathurst 1000

The 1988 Bathurst 1000 was expected to be a Ford Sierra whitewash, with Dick Johnsons team dominating the ATCC season. But controversy off the track stole headlines major sponsors pulled out, and a wave of protests over car legality saw vehicles stripped, rebuilt, and re-tuned under pressure.

Qualifying was based on Fridays sessions, with a Top 10 Shootout turned invitation-only for 12, offering just prize money as incentive. Ford Sierras locked out the top seven grid spots, while the Holden VL Commodore of Grice and Percy qualified 11th nearly six seconds off pole.

From the rolling start, the Sierras surged ahead, but mechanical issues plagued the field. Of 48 starters, only 18 finished. Grice and Percys Holden battled through the chaos to finish 15th, completing 139 of 161 laps a gritty result in a race of attrition.

This 1/18 Model Features:

• The race-tuned body kit is a distinguishing feature of the Walkinshaw VL Commodore. The bonnet scoop hides cutouts that align with the engine.
• BBS wheel covers attached to the front wheels look great, behind the rims are etched metal disc brakes.
• The race car interior features additional dash instrumentation. The racing seat is soft-touch rubber and includes a 5-point racing harness.
• The road car interior has been stripped out to accommodate the roll cage. Note the armrests have been removed from the doors.
• The Holden V8 has an outstanding level of detail, still featuring dual throttle bodies but now connected to a large air box.
• The front chassis shows the engine sump, exhaust system and working suspension. The front wheels are even linked to the steering wheel.
• The rear of the chassis shows the drive-shaft, axle, sprung rear suspension, anti-roll bars and Panhard rod.
• The detailed chassis features the limited edition etched metal production number.
