Originally designed as a practical ‘sedan delivery’ body style, the Panel Van quickly became an Australian icon. Its perfect blend of cargo space and customisable interiors made it popular with tradespeople — from painters to police — but by the 1970s, it had taken on a whole new life in Australia’s youth and leisure scene.

Custom murals, plush fit-outs, and beachside adventures defined the era, as the “big three” manufacturers joined the craze with their youth-styled vans — the Holden Sandman, Chrysler Drifter, and Ford Sundowner. While often associated with surf culture, these vans were far more than weekend beach cruisers — they represented a lifestyle.

The Ford Falcon Sundowner stood out with its bold design and sporty performance. Available in three body styles — the Escort, Transit, and Falcon — the Sundowner was based on the Falcon 500 Van and came packed with premium GS Hardtop features. These included comprehensive dash instrumentation, ‘NASA’ bonnet scoops, slotted sport rims, and driving lights.

Its distinctive side decals, lack of rear windows, and removal of side mouldings gave it a tough, unmistakable look. Under the bonnet, the standard 4.1-litre engine could be upgraded to a 4.9L or 5.8L with the GT Power Pack, adding four-wheel disc brakes and a limited-slip differential for serious performance.
