M4 sherman (officially medium tank, m4) - american medium tank, solution during world war ii.  the british army used the name m4 general sherman.  a tank named after general william sherman. The sherman was based on the chassis and many subassemblies of the m3 lee tank, on which a turret with a 75 mm gun was mounted.  allow a quick switch from commissioning to production of a new vehicle.  the period from february 1942 to the end of the second civil war, total of 49,000 versions produced.  used, among others, by the armies of the usa, great britain, poland, france and the ussr.  special versions were also built, such as: floating sherman dd (duplex drive - double), sherman crab (with mine countermeasures), sherman dozer (anti-engineer tank with a front blade - for mine clearing and engineering work),

Production of the m4 began in 1942.
